Bike Elf began our partnership with the Smoky Mountain Children’s Home in Spring 2017 with a Read, Write & Ride program pilot entitled Managing Your Money Wisely. The class was delivered to four amazing young ladies who are part of the SMCH independent living program.
Jan Legg, the course instructor, and Dennis and Jeanne DeValeria, curriculum designers, developed the initial the course outline and material. As a dry run, Legg delivered the course at the Old Dominion Cottage. Tons of learning occurred and wonderful friendships formed. Two of the participants successfully completed the course based on predetermined criteria and earned bicycle helmets and certificates of completion from Bike Elf (they already have bikes). Moving forward the Bike Elf Read, Write & Ride curriculum team will tweak the course material and schedule another Managing Your Money Wisely class at SMCH.
